Whistling or Screeching Pipes When Water Runs: Causes & Fixes
A high-pitched whistle, squeal or screech that lasts as long as the water is running is one of the few plumbing noises that tells you something specific. It's not water hammer, it's not air in the lines, and it's not the drain. It's the sound of water forced through an opening too small for the flow trying to get through it — and finding which opening takes about five minutes and no tools. Here's the elimination sequence California plumbers use, what each fix typically costs, and why a whistle at every fixture in the house is the one you shouldn't put off.
First, make sure it's actually a whistle
Pipe noises get lumped together, and the fix for one does nothing for another. Sort yours before spending money:
- A sharp single bang the instant a valve, washing machine or toilet finishes shutting off is water hammer — a pressure-wave problem, covered in our banging pipes guide.
- Spitting, sputtering or an intermittent hiss at an open faucet that improves the longer it runs is air in the water lines.

The physics, briefly, because it makes the diagnosis obvious
Water is essentially incompressible, so when it squeezes through a narrowed opening — a partly closed valve, a scaled-up seat, a clogged screen, a worn cartridge — its velocity through that gap jumps sharply. Past a certain point the local pressure at the restriction drops far enough that vapor bubbles form and collapse (cavitation), and the flow starts shedding pressure fluctuations at an audible frequency. The pipe downstream acts as the sound box. Researchers Testud, Moussou, Hirschberg and Aurégan measured exactly this in a laboratory water pipe, showing how a simple orifice becomes a genuine noise source once the pressure drop across it is large enough to make the flow cavitate — the noise is generated at the restriction itself, not by the pipework carrying it (Journal of Fluids and Structures, 2007 — study on Google Scholar).
The practical translation: the whistle is at the restriction, so the whole diagnosis is a question of scope — one fixture, one appliance, the hot side only, or upstream of everything?
The five-minute elimination test
Open one fixture at a time, fully, with everything else off, and write down the answers.
- One faucet whistles, others don't → the problem is in that fixture or its shutoff.
- It only happens while the toilet refills → the fill valve. This is the single most common source of a household whistle.
- Only when the washing machine or dishwasher fills → the appliance's supply valve, screen or hose.
- Only on hot water, at any fixture → the water heater or its inlet/outlet.
- Every fixture, hot and cold → the problem is upstream: house pressure, the PRV, the main shutoff or the meter.
- Only when irrigation or a hose is running → a hose bib, anti-siphon valve or irrigation valve.
One faucet only: aerator, cartridge, or a half-closed angle stop
Three suspects, in order. The aerator at the spout tip unscrews by hand and is usually full of scale and grit in California water — the same part behind weak flow at a single faucet. Next, the angle stop under the sink: if someone shut it partway during a past repair and never reopened it, you've built a restriction on purpose. Only while the toilet refills: the fill valve
A whistle or high-pitched moan that starts a second after the flush and stops exactly when the tank finishes is a fill valve whose inlet screen is silted up or whose diaphragm has hardened — water pushed through a narrow, worn opening at high velocity for the entire refill. Hot water only: the water heater side
If cold water is silent everywhere and hot water whistles everywhere, work through the heater's own restrictions: the cold inlet shutoff on top of the tank left partly closed (very common after a service visit), a broken or scale-crusted dip tube, a weeping T&P relief or drain valve, or hardened scale narrowing the nipples at the top of the tank. On a tankless unit it's usually scale in the heat exchanger. The whole house whistles: check pressure before touching anything
This is the case that matters financially. Thread a screw-on pressure gauge (about $15 at any hardware store) onto an outdoor hose bib with everything in the house off, and read it. Normal residential static pressure sits roughly between 40 and 80 psi. California Plumbing Code Section 608.2 requires an approved pressure regulator, preceded by a strainer, wherever static pressure exceeds 80 psi. Take a second reading late at night: municipal pressure climbs when demand drops, and a house that reads 75 psi at noon can sit well over 100 psi at 3 a.m.
What the reading tells you:
- Over 80 psi with no regulator → you need one. New PRV installation typically runs $350–$800 in California.
- Over 80 psi, or wildly swinging readings, with a regulator present → the PRV has failed or drifted. Replacement typically runs $250–$700 installed, more where access is poor; details in our PRV replacement cost guide.
- Normal pressure but a whole-house whistle → look for a partially closed main shutoff or a partly closed PRV throttling the whole house, a failing gate valve whose internal disc has dropped, or an old meter or meter-side valve restricting flow. The utility owns the meter side; call them before paying anyone to dig.
A regulator can also be the noise source rather than the cure. Ulanicki, Picinali and Janus instrumented a working pressure reducing valve in a water distribution system and showed that cavitation across the valve can be diagnosed from the noise it emits, using acoustic indicators alongside hydraulic ones (Procedia Engineering, 2015 — study on Google Scholar). Utilities use that principle at network scale; in a house it means a singing PRV is a component reporting its own operating condition, not a quirk to live with.
Only in summer, or only when you irrigate
A whistle that appears with the sprinklers and vanishes the rest of the year usually comes from a hose bib washer, an anti-siphon/vacuum breaker, or an irrigation zone valve — all sitting at the end of a high-flow branch where velocity is highest. Hose bib and vacuum breaker parts are inexpensive and often DIY; a screeching zone valve is usually a diaphragm replacement handled by an irrigation tech rather than a plumber.
What's reasonably DIY and what isn't
- DIY: soaking an aerator, fully opening an angle stop, swapping a toilet fill valve, replacing a hose bib washer, taking a gauge reading.
- Borderline: faucet cartridge replacement (brand-specific parts, seized cartridges break) and water heater flushing (hot water, sediment, a drain valve that may not reseal).
- Call a licensed plumber: anything involving the main shutoff, the PRV, the meter, a seized angle stop, or a whistle you cannot localize.
Why an overpressure whistle is worth fixing now
A single whistling faucet is an annoyance. A whole-house whistle caused by excessive pressure is a bill accruing quietly: sustained overpressure erodes faucet cartridges and fill valves, stresses supply hoses (a burst washing machine hose is among the most destructive routine failures a house can have), forces the water heater's relief valve, and accelerates pinhole leaks in copper.
