Research page, not a site visit. Plumber Comparator is not a plumbing contractor and its editor is not a licensed plumber. Figures below are typical ranges and cited public data; your job needs a written quote from a CSLB-licensed C-36 contractor.

How the estimate works
- The job range is the typical installed or served price in California for that job, the same figure as on our California plumbing price list. Each line shows what moves it (access, size, code work).
- The region comes from your city: 10 regions, each with a typical hourly labor rate and service call fee.
- What it does not do: it does not adjust the job price city by city. We do not have reliable public data for that, and an invented city multiplier would look precise without being true. Your region's labor rate tells you which part of the range to expect.
- What it cannot know: the state of your pipes, permits and code upgrades, after-hours timing. A written, itemized quote from a licensed contractor is the only real price.

Before you accept a quote
- Ask for the price itemized: parts, labor, permit, code items, haul-away, restoration.
- Check the contractor's license on the CSLB lookup. Work over $1,000, or any job that needs a permit, must be done by a licensed contractor in California (B&P Code § 7048).
- On a home improvement contract, the down payment cannot exceed $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less (B&P Code § 7159.5).
- For a water heater, the quote should include seismic straps, required on every installation (Health and Safety Code § 19211).

How accurate is this plumbing cost calculator?
It gives the typical California range for the job, the same figures as our cost pages, plus the labor rate and service call fee for your region. It does not see your house: access, pipe condition, permits and code upgrades decide where a real quote lands. Use it to judge quotes, not to replace them.
Why does the calculator not change the price for my city?
We have regional labor rates, not reliable job prices city by city, so we show the statewide job range next to your region's hourly rate and service call fee instead of inventing a city-specific number.
What should I do if a quote is far above the range?
Ask for an itemized quote and compare the line items: permits, code work, access and restoration often explain the gap. Get a second written quote from a CSLB-licensed contractor before signing anything large.
