Why California prices differ from national averages

Labor cost to install a water heater

Most California plumbers quote a water heater as one installed price, unit included. When you supply the heater yourself, the labor-only price for a standard 40–50 gallon tank swap is typically $600–$1,500, plus $150–$600 of code items if the old setup is out of date (straps, relief-valve drain, venting, expansion tank) and the permit. On a gas heater the plumber also has to connect the gas line and match the flue, which is where old installations most often need correcting. The hourly rate behind the price depends on the region, from $90–$160 an hour in the cheapest parts of the state to $150–$250 in the Bay Area (full table by region further down this page).

Labor-only is often higher than the installed quote minus the store price of the tank, and it splits the warranty: the plumber covers the work, the manufacturer the tank. If the tank itself is leaking, it cannot be repaired: shut off the cold supply and the gas or power, and replace it. If it still works but is old, planning the swap lets you compare two or three quotes instead of accepting an emergency price. The practical takeaway is modest: an annual flush is reasonable maintenance, not a health cure.
