  1. Hums but does not turn: switch it off and unplug it or turn off the breaker. Insert the hex (Allen) key into the socket under the unit and work it back and forth to free the grinding plate.
  2. Silent: press the red reset button on the bottom. Check the breaker and, if there is one, the wall switch or air switch.
  3. Never put your hand in the unit. Use tongs to remove an object, with the power off.

For a household, the practical point is simpler: fats and fibrous scraps still clog pipes. Keep grease, coffee grounds, eggshells and stringy peels out of the unit, and run cold water while grinding.

Permits and hiring

Replacing a disposal in the same place is usually minor work. Irvine, for example, lists replacing a garbage disposal among plumbing work that does not need a permit when no valves, pipes or fixtures are replaced or rearranged; rules vary by city. New wiring may require an electrician. If the total job reaches $1,000 in labor and materials, it must be done by a licensed contractor (B&P Code § 7048); check licenses on the CSLB lookup.
