Most slab leak repairs in California cost $500–$4,000, plus finding the leak ($150–$600, often credited to the repair) and any flooring work. The main decision is how to fix it: break the concrete at the leak, or abandon the buried pipe and run a new line through walls or the attic.
| Step or option | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Leak detection (acoustic, thermal, tracer gas) | $150–$600, often credited |
| Spot repair through the slab | $500–$2,500 plus flooring |
| Reroute the failed line overhead or through walls | $1,500–$4,000 |
| Whole-house repipe after repeated leaks | $4,500–$15,000+ |

Facing a slab leak bill? The California Homeowner Plumbing Pack, $59. Its slab leak and insurance claim kit walks you through the decision in order: the ten-minute meter test to confirm the leak, what professional detection should hand you, spot repair vs reroute vs repipe with the questions to ask before choosing, what a homeowners policy often covers and often does not, the deadlines California insurers must meet (15 days to acknowledge a claim, 40 days to accept or deny it after proof of claim, under 10 CCR § 2695), a claim log and three letters to your insurer ready to adapt.
The pack also includes the sewer line kit, a maintenance calendar, and in full the California Plumbing Price Book and the Water Heater Replacement Kit: 33 chapters. You read it online right after paying by card through Stripe; one payment, full refund within 14 days on request. It helps you decide and check the work; it is not a repair manual or legal advice on your own policy.
Signs of a slab leak
- A warm spot on the floor (hot-water lines fail more often than cold).
- The water meter moves with every fixture off.
- The sound of running water with nothing on; a sudden jump in the water bill.
- Damp carpet, cupping wood floors or cracks near a wall with no obvious source.
Spot repair or reroute?
| Spot repair | Reroute | |
|---|---|---|
| How | Open the floor at the leak, fix one section | Cap the buried line, run new pipe above |
| Best when | First leak, pipe otherwise sound, floor easy to patch | Leak under expensive flooring, or pipe showing wear |
| Downside | The rest of the buried pipe is the same age | Drywall patches, sometimes longer runs |
Why a second leak often follows the first
Many California slab homes have copper lines, and pinhole leaks in copper are still poorly understood. Gibson and Karney's 30-year review of copper pitting research estimates about 750,000 pinhole leaks a year in the United States and notes that the causes are not fully known; water chemistry, biological activity and pressure surges are all suspects. Lytle and Schock, at the U.S. EPA, describe how pitting can cause pipe failure within relatively short periods after installation, and why many homeowners choose to replace the whole system. Neither study predicts your house. But if a second leak appears in the same system, get a repipe quote before paying for another spot repair.
Insurance
Homeowners policies often cover the cost of accessing the leak and the resulting water damage, but not the pipe repair itself. Read your policy and call your insurer before work starts; keep photos and the leak detection report. You are entitled to a free copy of your full policy after a loss: California insurers must send it within 30 calendar days of a request (Insurance Code § 2084), and the Fair Claims Settlement Practices Regulations set the deadlines for the rest of the claim.
Hiring
- Ask for the detection report showing the location and which line (hot or cold).
- Get the spot-repair and reroute options priced side by side.
- A slab repair is permitted work above the $1,000 threshold: use a licensed contractor (B&P Code § 7048, CSLB lookup). The down payment is capped at $1,000 or 10% (§ 7159.5).
