Water Hammer: Why Your Pipes Bang When You Shut Off a Faucet, and What Fixing It Costs
A sudden, sharp bang somewhere in the walls right after a faucet clicks off, a toilet finishes filling, or the washing machine's solenoid valve snaps shut — that's water hammer, and it's one of the most commonly misdiagnosed noises in a house. Homeowners often assume it's a sign of a bigger problem, or ignore it as a quirk of an old house. It's neither: it's a specific, well-understood pressure event with a handful of causes and a handful of fixes, some of them cheap. Here's how to identify it, what's actually happening inside the pipe, and what it typically costs to make it stop.
What water hammer actually is
Water moving through a pipe has real momentum — a column of water in a 3/4-inch line moving at a few feet per second carries meaningful force. When a valve closes quickly (a washing machine's electric solenoid valve is the classic example, since it can shut in a fraction of a second), that moving column slams to a stop almost instantly. The energy has to go somewhere, and it goes into a pressure spike that can briefly run several times higher than your normal static pressure, slapping against the nearest pipe fitting or wall stud hard enough to be heard — and, over years, hard enough to loosen fittings, stress solder joints, and shorten the life of valves and appliance connections.
Common triggers, from most to least frequent
- Washing machines and dishwashers — their fast-closing solenoid valves are, by a wide margin, the most common source of water hammer in a home. A single bang right as a cycle's fill stage ends is the textbook case.
- Toilet fill valves, especially older ballcock-style valves that shut abruptly once the tank reaches its set level.
- Quick-closing faucets, particularly single-handle fixtures that go from full flow to fully closed in a short quarter-turn.
- High static water pressure, which makes every valve closure more forceful — this is why water pressure problems and water hammer often show up together in the same house, and why checking your pressure is usually the first diagnostic step.
- Missing or failed air chambers. Homes built before the 1980s often relied on a simple length of capped pipe (an air chamber) above each fixture to cushion pressure spikes with a pocket of trapped air. - Loose pipes that aren't properly strapped or cushioned against framing, which turns a moderate pressure pulse into a loud knock simply because the pipe is free to move and hit the stud.
Is it actually a problem, or just annoying?
An occasional, mild knock isn't an emergency, but chronic water hammer is worth addressing rather than living with, for two reasons. First, the repeated pressure spikes stress every solder joint, compression fitting, and valve in the line it travels through — over years, that's a real contributor to fittings loosening or starting to weep. Second, and more concretely, that same pressure spike is hard on appliance connections: the flexible supply hoses feeding a washing machine or dishwasher take the worst of it, and a hammer-related hose failure is a genuine flood risk, particularly if the machine sits unattended for a full cycle. If your water hammer is loud, frequent, or has gotten worse recently, that's a sign to get it looked at rather than just turning up the TV.

Some cases are genuinely DIY-friendly. A hardware-store hammer arrestor threaded onto an accessible washing machine supply line, or a quick pressure check with a hose-bib gauge, are both within reach of a confident homeowner and cost very little to try first. Where it stops being a DIY project is anything requiring the wall to be opened, any work on the PRV itself (a poorly set replacement can create a new high- or low-pressure problem for the whole house), or hammer that persists after the obvious fixes — at that point it's worth a licensed plumber's time rather than guessing further, especially in houses with older galvanized or original copper supply lines, where added stress from years of unaddressed hammer is more consequential than in a newer repipe.

- Check static water pressure at an outside hose bib — anything consistently above 80 psi points strongly at the PRV as the root cause.
