Water Heater Making Noise? What Popping, Rumbling, Ticking and Screeching Actually Mean
A water heater is supposed to be one of the quietest appliances in the house — so when it starts popping, rumbling or shrieking from the garage or closet, it gets your attention fast. Most of these noises have a specific, identifiable cause, and most of them are fixable before they become a failed tank flooding the floor. Here's how to tell which sound means "schedule a flush" and which means "call a plumber this week."
Popping, rumbling or "kettling": almost always sediment
This is by far the most common water heater noise, and it has a simple mechanical explanation. Minerals in your water — mainly calcium and magnesium — settle to the bottom of the tank and bake into a hardened layer of sediment. When the burner or lower heating element fires, water trapped under and inside that layer boils and pushes toward the surface as steam bubbles, popping and rumbling as they burst through the sediment crust. It's the same physics as a kettle building scale, and it isn't just noisy: mineral deposits are poor conductors of heat, so they insulate the water from the heat source. A study by S.N. Kazi, G.G. Duffy and X.D. Chen, published in Applied Thermal Engineering, measured how mineral scale sharply raises the thermal resistance of a heated metal surface, forcing the heat source to work harder to transfer the same amount of heat (see the study on Google Scholar). In a water heater, that translates directly into longer heating cycles, higher energy bills, and — eventually — a cracked glass lining or an early tank failure.
Other noises and what they mean
- Ticking or clicking as the tank heats up and cools down is usually just metal expanding and contracting, or the anode rod knocking gently against the tank wall — normal and rarely worth a service call on its own.
- Screeching, whistling or high-pitched squealing points to restricted water flow — most often a partially closed inlet valve or a build-up narrowing the pipe — forcing water through a tight opening. Check that the cold-water shutoff at the top of the tank is fully open before assuming the worst.
- Humming or buzzing on an electric unit usually traces to a loose heating element or a failing element starting to burn out.

- Rumbling that's gotten progressively louder over months means the sediment layer has been building the whole time — the noise is a symptom of neglect, not a new fault.
Why this is a bigger deal in California

A widely cited water-heater efficiency study conducted for the Water Quality Research Foundation found that harder water measurably cuts efficiency and shortens service life in gas, electric and tankless water heaters alike compared with softened water, with the effect worsening as hardness rises (see the research on Google Scholar). In practice that means a tank in the Central Valley or Inland Empire can build a noisy sediment layer in a fraction of the time it would take in a soft-water region.
The fix: flushing the tank
For sediment-driven popping and rumbling, the standard fix is draining and flushing the tank: shut off the power or gas, close the cold inlet, connect a hose to the drain valve, and run water through until it flows clear. Bring in a professional when: the popping is loud and constant rather than occasional, a DIY flush doesn't quiet it down, you notice rust-colored water alongside the noise, the tank is more than 8–10 years old, or any noise is paired with a leak at the base. Preventing it from coming back
