What an angle stop actually is
"Angle stop" refers to the compact shutoff valve installed where a fixture's flexible supply line meets the wall or floor stub-out — one under each side of a sink, one behind or beside a toilet, one at a washing machine box. Why old angle stops fail
Two failure modes, and they're opposite problems:
- It won't close all the way. Mineral deposits and corrosion build up inside the valve body and around the seat, so the handle turns but the valve never fully stops the flow. This is the scarier one, because you only discover it mid-repair — the water you thought you shut off keeps trickling, or keeps flowing at full pressure.
- It won't turn at all. The stem seizes from years of mineral scale and corrosion around threads that haven't moved since installation. Force it and older, cheaper valves can snap at the stem or crack the body, turning a routine shutoff into an active leak with no way to stop it locally.
California's widespread hard water is a big part of why this happens as early as it does. Homes built or last replumbed decades ago typically have multi-turn compression valves — you turn the handle several full rotations to close it, and it's this style that most often seizes or weeps over time. Newer installations, and any competent plumber doing a repair today, use quarter-turn ball valves: a 90-degree twist from open to closed, a design that's simpler, more reliable long-term, and not meaningfully more expensive to buy. If a plumber is already replacing one angle stop in your home, it's worth asking for a quarter-turn ball valve rather than a like-for-like compression replacement — the incremental cost is minor and it buys you a valve that's far less likely to seize shut by the time you need it again.
