Air in Water Pipes: Why Faucets Sputter and How to Fix It in California
A faucet that spits and sputters — sometimes with a hiss, sometimes with a little spray that startles whoever is standing at the sink — is one of the more unnerving plumbing symptoms because it does not look like a leak, a clog, or anything else with an obvious cause. In most cases the explanation is simple: air has gotten into the water lines and is working its way out through the nearest open tap. That is usually harmless and self-correcting. But sputtering that will not go away, or that shows up out of nowhere in a house that never had it before, can point to a well pump losing its prime, a waterlogged pressure tank, or a water main problem the utility hasn't fixed yet. Here is how to tell which one you are dealing with.
Why air ends up in a pressurized water line
Household plumbing is normally a sealed, fully liquid-filled system — there is no room for air to enter under ordinary operation. It gets in when that seal is broken somewhere upstream, which happens in a handful of predictable ways:
- The water was shut off and turned back on. Any time the main shutoff, a fixture's own shutoff, or a whole zone of the house has been closed and reopened — after a repair, a fixture swap, or a main water line replacement — the pipe that was drained refills with a mix of water and air. This is the single most common cause and it is completely normal.
- The water utility flushed or repaired a main nearby. Municipal crews periodically flush hydrants and mains to clear sediment, and any excavation or valve work on the street main pushes air into the distribution system. Homes near that work often notice sputtering — and sometimes cloudy or discolored water alongside it — for a day or two afterward.
- A well pump is losing its prime or drawing down the well faster than it recharges. On a private well, the pump can pull in air along with water when the water level in the well drops close to the pump intake, especially during a dry summer or a heavy irrigation day. This shows up as sputtering that gets worse with heavier water use and often comes with a drop in pressure.
- A well pressure tank has gone waterlogged. The tank holds a cushion of compressed air behind a rubber bladder; if the bladder ruptures or the air charge leaks out over the years, the tank can no longer smooth out the pump's on/off cycling, and air migrates into the house lines along with short-cycling and banging. - A recent leak or repair pulled air in through the point of the break. A pinhole leak, a repaired supply line, or any point where the pipe was open to atmosphere even briefly can introduce air that takes a few days of normal use to fully clear.
Air versus water hammer — they are not the same thing
It is easy to lump every strange pipe noise into one category, but sputtering air and water hammer are different mechanisms with different fixes. Water hammer is a sharp, single bang at the instant a fast-closing valve (a washing machine solenoid, a dishwasher, an ice maker) slams shut, and it is a pressure-wave problem solved with an arrestor at the valve. Air in the lines, by contrast, produces a sputtering, spitting, or intermittent-hissing stream right at an open faucet, and it tends to improve the longer that faucet runs as the air pocket works its way out. The two can occur together — a large air pocket moving through a pipe can itself cause the pipe to knock as it passes a fitting — but treating a straightforward air problem with an arrestor, or a water-hammer problem by just running the taps, will not fix the wrong one.
How to clear air from household pipes yourself
- Start at the highest fixture in the house — typically an upstairs bathroom — and run both the hot and cold taps fully open for several minutes. Air rises, so clearing the top of the system first prevents it from settling into lines you have already flushed.
- Work your way down, fixture by fixture, ending at the lowest point in the house — a laundry sink, a basement fixture, or an outdoor hose bib. Let each one run until the sputtering stops and the stream is smooth and steady.
- Do the water heater separately. If hot-water taps are worse than cold, there may be an air pocket trapped in the water heater tank itself; running the hot side at a couple of fixtures for a few extra minutes usually clears it. - Give it a day if it doesn't clear immediately. After utility work on a nearby main, it can take normal daily water use over 24-48 hours to fully purge trapped air from the whole system — a single flushing pass does not always catch it all the first time.
When it's more than just air
A few patterns are worth a second look rather than just running the taps again:
- Sputtering that keeps coming back every few days with no shutoff or utility work to explain it usually means something is continuously introducing air — most often a well pump problem or a small leak — rather than a one-time pocket working its way out.
- Sputtering plus a steady drop in overall water pressure on a well system is a classic sign the pump is struggling to keep up, whether from a failing pump, a dropping water table, or a waterlogged tank. This is worth diagnosing before the pump itself is damaged by running dry.

- Air showing up alongside discolored or cloudy water after known utility work is usually cosmetic and clears with the air, but if it persists for more than a couple of days it is worth a call to the water provider to confirm the main work is fully resolved.
Why pipe material and layout affect how quickly air clears
How readily a pocket of trapped air moves through a line, and how much of a pressure spike it produces along the way, depends on the pipe's geometry and material, not just where the air came from. A 2025 study by Oscar Pozos-Estrada, published in the journal Water, used experiments and numerical modeling of valve closures on either side of a trapped air pocket in a pressurized pipe and found that the pocket's position relative to the valve changes whether it dampens or amplifies the resulting pressure transient (study on Google Scholar). In a home, that translates to a practical pattern plumbers see often: the same air pocket that clears quietly through a straight, gently sloped run of pipe can produce noticeable spitting, or even a knock, when it reaches a sharp elbow or a partially closed valve on its way out — which is one more reason a fixture close to the point of entry (the water heater inlet, a laundry box near the main) often sputters longest.
