Private Well Water Testing in California: What to Test For, How Often, and What It Costs
If your water comes from a city or district connection, someone else is legally required to test it and publish the results every year. If it comes from a private well, that job is entirely yours — no state agency samples your water automatically, and nothing stops a contaminant from building up quietly for years before a lab test or a health issue reveals it. An estimated two million Californians rely on domestic wells or small state-regulated systems for drinking water, concentrated in the Central Valley, the Sierra foothills, wine country, and rural stretches of Southern California. Here's what's actually worth testing for, how often, and what it costs.
Why "the water looks and tastes fine" isn't a test
The contaminants that matter most in a private well — bacteria, nitrate, arsenic, uranium — are colorless, odorless, and tasteless at the concentrations that actually pose a health risk. A well can run clear, cold, and pleasant to drink for years while quietly exceeding a safe nitrate or arsenic level the whole time. Taste and clarity tell you about sediment, iron, or sulfur — not about the things a lab test is designed to catch.
What the research shows about California groundwater specifically
Well water quality in California isn't uniform, and the risk depends heavily on where you are. A 2018 study led by researchers at Stanford University, published in Nature Communications (Smith, Knight & Fendorf), found that heavy groundwater pumping in the San Joaquin Valley releases naturally occurring arsenic trapped in clay layers into the aquifer, measurably raising arsenic concentrations in the water drawn from wells in the region — a finding with direct relevance for the roughly one million people who depend on San Joaquin Valley groundwater for drinking water. Separately, the USGS's California Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) program, which has been systematically sampling the aquifers that feed domestic wells statewide, found arsenic above the federal safety limit in roughly 14% of the domestic-well groundwater resource in the San Joaquin Valley's Kern County subbasin alone — a useful reminder that this isn't a rare, isolated finding in that part of the state.
What to test for, and how often
- Every year: total coliform bacteria and nitrate. These are the two contaminants that can change fastest — bacteria after a flood, a nearby septic issue, or wellhead damage; nitrate from fertilizer runoff or septic systems in agricultural areas. Annual testing is the standard recommendation from the EPA and California county health departments alike.
- Once, as a baseline, and then periodically: arsenic, uranium, and other regional metals. These occur naturally in the rock and soil your water passes through and don't usually change quickly, but they vary enormously by location — test once when you buy the property or drill a new well, then again every few years or after any noticeable change in flow, taste, or color.
- If you're near agriculture, industry, or an old gas station or dry cleaner: add pesticides, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), and petroleum-related contaminants to the baseline panel.
- After any major event — a nearby flood, wildfire, new construction, or a period the well sat unused — retest bacteria and nitrate regardless of your normal schedule.
Regional risk factors to know
Arsenic and uranium show up more often in the San Joaquin and Tulare basins and in some Sierra foothill and volcanic-soil areas. Nitrate is most common in agricultural regions of the Central Valley and Salinas Valley, where fertilizer and septic systems both contribute. If you're in one of these areas, it's worth asking your well contractor or county health department whether local testing data already points to a specific contaminant of concern nearby — it can save you from paying for a broad panel when the real risk in your area is narrow and well documented.
What testing costs
A basic annual panel — coliform bacteria, nitrate, and often pH and total dissolved solids — typically runs $40-$75 through a certified lab. A comprehensive baseline panel adding arsenic, other heavy metals, and VOCs typically runs $150-$300. Use a lab certified by California's Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP) — a retail test-strip kit is fine for a rough hardness or pH check, but it isn't reliable for bacteria or trace metals at the concentrations that matter for health.
Free and low-cost testing programs
Several California programs help offset the cost. Under SB 200's Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Fund, the State Water Resources Control Board and regional water boards run no-cost domestic well testing in parts of the Central Valley, Central Coast, and other areas with documented contamination risk, prioritizing lower-income households. Separately, AB 2454, which took effect in 2024, requires landlords with a private domestic well serving a rental property in designated high-risk areas to participate in a free water testing and treatment program. Many county health departments also offer free or reduced-cost coliform bacteria testing on request. What happens if something comes back positive
A bacteria hit often traces back to a cracked well cap, a wellhead sitting below grade where runoff pools around it, or a casing that needs resealing — sometimes fixable without any water treatment at all. Elevated nitrate, arsenic, or uranium calls for a treatment solution sized to the specific contaminant: reverse osmosis and specific ion-exchange or adsorptive media are effective against different things, and a system built for hardness alone won't touch any of them.
