Hot Water Smells Like Rotten Eggs? Sulfur Bacteria, Anode Rods & Fix Cost in California
Turn on the cold tap and the water is fine. Turn on the hot tap and it smells like rotten eggs. That specific pattern — fine cold, foul hot — throws a lot of homeowners because the instinct is to assume a sewer problem, when the real cause is usually sitting inside the water heater tank itself. First, rule out sewer gas
Before chasing the water heater, confirm the smell is actually in the water and not in the room. Fill a glass with hot water away from the bathroom — the kitchen sink is a good test spot — and smell it directly. Why it's almost always hot water only
The rotten-egg odor is hydrogen sulfide gas, produced when naturally occurring sulfate-reducing bacteria metabolize sulfate in the water. These bacteria need an oxygen-poor environment to multiply, which describes the inside of a water heater tank far better than it describes cold supply pipes that see more turnover and dissolved oxygen. Compounding the problem, most tank water heaters contain a magnesium (or magnesium-alloy) anode rod, a sacrificial metal rod that protects the steel tank from corrosion by corroding first. That reaction releases hydrogen, and in a tank where sulfate-reducing bacteria are already present, the extra hydrogen feeds their metabolism and increases hydrogen sulfide production — which is why the smell often starts or worsens shortly after a new water heater, with its fresh magnesium rod, goes in.

Why well water and low-chlorine systems are more prone to it
Municipal water carries a chlorine or chloramine residual that keeps bacterial growth in check throughout the distribution system, which is one reason city-supplied homes see this problem less often than homes on a private well. Well water typically arrives with no disinfectant residual at all, so once sulfate-reducing bacteria get a foothold — commonly introduced during well drilling, pump servicing, or simply present in the local groundwater — nothing in the supply chain is knocking them back before they reach the water heater. Fixes, and what they cost
- Chlorination shock treatment. Flushing the tank and disinfecting it with a chlorine solution kills the existing bacterial colony, though it can return over weeks or months if the source conditions haven't changed. - Swap the magnesium anode rod for an aluminum-zinc rod. Aluminum-zinc rods still protect the tank from corrosion but don't drive the same hydrogen-producing reaction, which often resolves the smell without giving up the tank's corrosion protection entirely. A straightforward rod swap typically costs $100-$300 installed.
- Install a powered (impressed-current) anode rod. A powered anode uses a small electrical current instead of sacrificial metal, so it protects the tank without producing the hydrogen that feeds bacterial odor production, and it doesn't wear down the way a standard rod does. Expect $250-$450 installed — the highest upfront cost of the three options, but effectively a permanent fix rather than one that can recur.
- Raise the tank temperature temporarily. Sulfate-reducing bacteria don't tolerate sustained high heat well, so some plumbers will run the tank hotter for several hours as a one-time knockdown. Which fix makes sense for your situation
If the smell is new, mild, and you're not on a well, a chlorination shock combined with a routine flush is a reasonable first step and the least expensive option. If it comes back within a few months, or you're on a well where the bacteria have an ongoing supply, swapping to an aluminum-zinc or powered anode addresses the actual mechanism rather than just resetting the clock.
