What selenium is, and why "essential" doesn't mean "safe at any level"

The health standard: 50 parts per billion
Both the U.S. EPA and the State of California set the same limit for selenium in drinking water: a Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 0.05 milligrams per liter — 50 micrograms per liter, or 50 parts per billion (ppb). California's Department of Health Services adopted this MCL back in 1994, and it remains the benchmark a water quality lab will compare your result against. Unlike some contaminants where any detection is a concern, selenium results are read against this specific threshold — a low reading isn't a red flag, since some background selenium is normal and even nutritionally trivial; it's a result meaningfully above 50 ppb that calls for action.
Why selenium shows up in California well water specifically
Selenium contamination in California groundwater isn't random — it traces back to geology. Marine sedimentary rock formations in the Coast Ranges, laid down when much of the region was ocean floor, naturally contain soluble selenium. Where wells draw from soils and aquifers derived from those formations — notably parts of the western San Joaquin Valley — selenium can leach into groundwater at meaningfully elevated concentrations. USGS studies of the area have measured selenium in the range of 50 to over 1,000 µg/L in some groundwater zones, well above the health standard.
This isn't a new discovery. - Activated alumina: an adsorption media that binds selenium as water passes through it, commonly used in point-of-use cartridge systems.
