Reverse Osmosis vs. Whole-House Filtration: Which Does Your California Home Need?
Homeowners shopping for a water filter usually land on one of two very different systems and assume they're competing for the same job: reverse osmosis (RO) and whole-house filtration. They're not. One treats a single tap to drinking-water quality; the other treats every drop of water entering the house, mostly for aesthetics and fixture protection. Buying the wrong one for the problem you actually have is the most common — and most expensive — mistake in this category.
What each system actually does
- Reverse osmosis (point-of-use): installed under one sink, usually the kitchen, and pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane fine enough to block dissolved solids, heavy metals and many synthetic chemicals. - Whole-house filtration (point-of-entry): installed on the main line where it enters the house, typically sediment plus carbon media, and treats every fixture — showers, laundry, every sink. It's built for chlorine taste and odor, sediment, and (with the right cartridge) some scale-forming minerals, not for stripping out dissolved contaminants at the molecular level. Neither is a softener. If hardness (scale, spotted glasses, crusty fixtures) is the complaint, that's a separate system, usually quoted alongside a whole-house filter as part of the same install — ask your San Jose plumber to price a combined softener-plus-filter setup rather than treating them as competing options.
Where whole-house filtration wins
- Chlorine and chloramine taste/smell across the whole house — showers included, which RO can't touch since it only treats one tap.
- Sediment from an older municipal main or a private well, which protects water heaters, tankless units and fixture cartridges from premature wear.
- Whole-house convenience — every faucet, the ice maker, and the shower all get treated water without adding a filter at each point.
- Lower per-gallon cost and no wasted water — a plain carbon whole-house system doesn't reject any water the way RO does.
Where reverse osmosis wins
- Dissolved contaminants that carbon media doesn't reliably remove — arsenic, nitrate, and hexavalent chromium in particular, which show up in well water and some municipal supplies across the Central Valley and other parts of the state. - PFAS ("forever chemicals"), where the evidence for RO's advantage over carbon-only whole-house filters is unusually direct. A 2020 study by Herkert and colleagues, published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters, tested real residential filters in homes with PFAS-contaminated water and found that under-sink dual-stage and reverse-osmosis units achieved near-complete removal across the PFAS compounds measured, while point-of-entry activated-carbon systems performed inconsistently — removal was chain-length dependent, running roughly 60–70% for longer-chain PFAS and closer to 40% for shorter-chain compounds, and getting worse as the carbon media aged (study on Google Scholar). - Lower sodium and total dissolved solids for anyone on a sodium-restricted diet or who just wants noticeably better-tasting drinking and cooking water.
The case for running both
These systems stack well because they're not solving the same problem. A common setup for a well-water home or an older house with municipal sediment issues: a whole-house sediment/carbon filter (and softener, if hardness is also a factor) protects the plumbing and every fixture, while an RO system under the kitchen sink handles the water people actually drink and cook with — including whatever the whole-house system's carbon stage can't fully strip out. Installed together, that's typically the sum of both individual costs rather than a discount, but it's still cheaper than most homeowners assume once they've priced bottled water or a standalone drinking-water delivery service over a few years.
How to decide without overpaying
- Start with a water test, not a sales pitch. A basic potability panel (and, if you're on a private well, a targeted test for arsenic, nitrate or PFAS based on what's common in your area) tells you what's actually in the water before you spend on either system.
- If the complaint is smell, taste or spotting across the whole house, start with whole-house filtration (and a softener if hardness is confirmed) — it's the cheaper fix and solves the problem you're describing.
- If the concern is a specific contaminant — arsenic, nitrate, PFAS, lead from an old service line — RO at the tap you drink from is the system with test data behind it, and it's the lower-cost entry point if budget is tight.
- Don't buy either based on a countertop pitcher test kit. Home test strips are unreliable for the contaminants that matter most; get results from a certified lab or your water utility's published data first.
