PFAS in California Tap Water: What Homeowners Should Know About Filtration
PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, often called "forever chemicals" — have gone from an obscure regulatory acronym to a mainstream drinking-water concern in the last few years. They don't break down naturally, they've been used for decades in nonstick coatings, firefighting foam, and industrial processes, and they've turned up in groundwater across California, including in areas served by public water systems. Why PFAS end up in California tap water
PFAS reach groundwater and surface water mainly through industrial discharge, certain manufacturing sites, and firefighting foam used at airports and military bases. Because the compounds resist breakdown, they persist and travel through aquifers over long timeframes, which is why detections cluster near legacy industrial areas and older airfields rather than being evenly spread across the state.
What recent research has found
A 2025 study published in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology (Fillman et al.) looked directly at Southern California adults, comparing PFAS levels measured in their public water system's drinking water against PFAS found in their blood serum, and found a measurable association between the two — evidence that drinking water is a real exposure pathway for the communities studied, not just an abstract risk. Separately, the U.S. Geological Survey's California Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment Program has been systematically testing groundwater used for public and domestic drinking supply across the state and has documented detectable PFAS at a meaningful share of the wells sampled, concentrated in certain basins rather than uniformly statewide.
At the federal level, the EPA finalized the first enforceable national drinking water limits for several PFAS compounds in 2024, including a 4 parts-per-trillion limit for PFOA and PFOS individually — an extremely low threshold that reflects how potent these compounds are considered even in trace amounts.
How to find out what's in your own water
Every California public water system is required to publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) listing what has been detected, including PFAS where testing has occurred. Your provider's CCR is usually posted on their website or available on request, and the California State Water Resources Control Board also maintains public data on PFAS monitoring results by water system. If you're on a private well, none of that testing applies to you — well water isn't regulated the same way, so testing is on you if you want to know.
What filtration actually removes PFAS
Not every filter helps. A basic pitcher or refrigerator filter using standard activated carbon reduces chlorine taste and some sediment but is not reliably effective against PFAS. Two technologies have real evidence behind them:
- Reverse osmosis (RO), typically installed under the kitchen sink, is highly effective at rejecting PFAS along with a wide range of other contaminants. An under-sink RO system with professional installation typically runs $300-$800, plus periodic membrane and filter changes.
