PEX-A vs. PEX-B vs. PEX-C: Which Is Best for a California Repipe?
If you're getting quotes for a whole-house repipe, you've probably already sorted out that PEX beats copper on price (see our copper vs. PEX comparison for that half of the decision). What catches most homeowners off guard is the next question: which PEX? PEX-A, PEX-B and PEX-C are three different products made by three different manufacturing processes, and two plumbers quoting the same job can hand you noticeably different bids depending on which one they use and how many fittings the job needs. Here's what actually separates them.
They're all cross-linked polyethylene — made differently
"PEX" stands for cross-linked polyethylene, and the letter refers to how that cross-linking happens, not the pipe's quality tier:
- PEX-A is made with the Engel (peroxide) method, which cross-links the polyethylene before the tubing is extruded. This produces the highest degree of cross-linking, typically 85-89%, and a pipe that stays flexible and can be stretched — the basis for expansion-style fittings.
- PEX-B uses the silane (moisture-cure) method, cross-linking the material after extrusion with a catalyst and ambient humidity. It's usually 65-70% cross-linked, slightly stiffer than PEX-A, and is the most widely stocked and installed type in the U.S. residential market.
- PEX-C is cross-linked afterward using electron-beam (irradiation) processing. It's the least flexible of the three and, while functionally similar to PEX-B for most residential purposes, is less commonly used by production repipe crews.
Cost: material price and installed price tell different stories
By the foot, PEX-A tubing is consistently the most expensive of the three and PEX-B the cheapest — for common 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch supply tubing, PEX-A can run 60-130% more per foot than PEX-B depending on diameter and brand. But the installed price on your repipe estimate doesn't move in lockstep with material cost, because the two types are typically joined with different fitting systems:
- PEX-A is usually joined with expansion fittings (the pipe end is stretched over a fitting and shrinks back to grip it), which need fewer fittings per run and are fast to install once a plumber has the expansion tool — but that tool is a real up-front investment, which is part of why not every shop uses PEX-A.
- PEX-B is joined with crimp or cinch-clamp fittings, which are cheaper per fitting but generally require more of them along a given run — one estimate puts PEX-B installations at 20-30% more fittings than an equivalent PEX-A layout, and each fitting is a mechanical joint, and therefore a potential future leak point.
Net result: a PEX-A repipe often costs somewhat more upfront in material and tooling, but can end up with fewer joints buried in walls and slabs — a real consideration in a state where finding a slab leak later means jackhammering concrete, as covered in our slab leak repair guide.
Flexibility and freeze resistance matter more in some California climates than others
PEX-A's higher cross-linking gives it more elasticity — it can expand under freeze pressure and contract back afterward without splitting, which is the main reason it's often specified in colder-climate installs. That's a smaller selling point in coastal and Southern California, but it's genuinely relevant in the Sierra foothills, Tahoe-area cabins, and high-desert communities that see hard freezes; see our frozen pipe prevention guide for how often that risk actually comes up statewide. PEX-A's flexibility also pays off during rough-in itself — it snakes around framing with fewer elbow fittings, which matters most in tight retrofit spaces like an older home with cramped wall cavities.
Chemical resistance: a less obvious difference
One distinction that rarely comes up in sales pitches but does show up in the engineering literature is resistance to chlorinated water over the long term. All PEX pipe sold in the U.S. is formulated with antioxidants to resist chlorine-driven oxidative degradation (tested to the ASTM F2023 standard), and both PEX-A and PEX-B pass that bar for standard residential use. But a 2021 peer-reviewed review of polymer degradation in chlorinated water by Samarth and Mahanwar, published in the Open Journal of Organic Polymer Materials, notes that PEX-B's silane cross-linking chemistry — which doesn't rely on free-radical formation the way PEX-A's peroxide method does — tends to leave more of the pipe's built-in antioxidant stabilizers intact, giving it somewhat better inherent resistance to chlorine-driven oxidation over time (study on Google Scholar). In practice this is a second-order factor for most homeowners — water utility chlorine/chloramine levels covered in our chlorine and chloramine guide are well within what any code-compliant PEX product is rated to handle — but it's a legitimate data point if you're choosing between products for a system with unusually high chlorine dosing or a private well with heavy shock-chlorination history.
So which one should your repipe actually use?
For most California homes, the honest answer is: whichever one your plumber is set up to install well. PEX-B is the default at most repiping companies because it's cheaper, universally stocked, and every plumber knows how to crimp it — a well-executed PEX-B repipe is a completely reliable choice. PEX-A is worth asking about specifically if you want the fewest possible fittings in your walls, you're in a freeze-prone area, or your layout has a lot of tight turns. PEX-C is uncommon enough in residential repipe work that most homeowners won't be offered it as an option at all. What matters more than the letter grade is the installer: ask how many fittings your specific layout will need, whether they're using a manifold (home-run) system or trunk-and-branch (see our PEX manifold guide), and whether the fitting brand carries a lifetime warranty backing the whole system, not just the tubing.
