Galvanic Corrosion at Pipe Joints: Why Copper-to-Steel Connections Fail in California Homes

What galvanic corrosion actually is
Galvanic corrosion is an electrochemical reaction, not ordinary rust. When two different metals are physically connected and sit in water — which acts as an electrolyte — a small electrical current flows between them. One metal (the more "active" one, typically the zinc coating on galvanized steel) sacrifices itself and corrodes rapidly, while the other (copper) is comparatively protected. Where it shows up in a real house
The classic location is the water heater — copper supply lines connecting to the steel nipples on top of the tank, or to older galvanized branch lines feeding the rest of the house. How to recognize it
Galvanic corrosion tends to look different from a typical copper pinhole leak, which usually shows up as a small weep anywhere along a straight run of pipe. Galvanic damage instead concentrates right at a fitting: a rust-orange or greenish crust building up around a threaded joint, a fitting that feels chalky or flaky when you touch it, a slow drip that only ever seems to originate from one specific connection, or — in advanced cases — a steel nipple that has rusted through and seized so badly it snaps off when a plumber tries to remove it. The fix: a dielectric union, and what code requires
The standard fix is a dielectric union or dielectric nipple — a fitting with a plastic, rubber or nylon insulating insert that physically connects the two pipes while electrically isolating them, breaking the circuit that drives the corrosion. This isn't just a best practice; it's required. The California Plumbing Code, at Section 507.1, prohibits mixing dissimilar metals in a water piping system unless dielectric insulating fittings are used at the connection.
