PEX Manifold (Home-Run) Plumbing System Cost in California: Is It Worth It Over Trunk-and-Branch?
Once a California homeowner has decided to repipe with PEX instead of copper, a second, less obvious decision follows: how should the new pipe actually be laid out? Most plumbers default to trunk-and-branch, running a single hot and a single cold main through the house with smaller branch lines tee-ing off toward each fixture — the same layout copper has used for decades. The alternative is a manifold system, sometimes called home-run plumbing, where a dedicated hot and cold line runs from a central manifold near the water heater straight to every single fixture, with no tees or branches in between. On a home-run system, each fixture has its own dedicated line back to the manifold, so one fixture's demand doesn't rob another's pressure nearly as much.
- A shutoff at every fixture, at one central location. Repairing a single sink or toilet on a home-run system means walking to the manifold and closing one labeled valve — no crawling under a specific fixture or shutting off water to half the house. - Faster hot water at low-flow fixtures, if sized correctly. Matching a smaller-diameter dedicated line to a low-flow fixture reduces the volume of standing water that has to be pushed out and reheated before hot water arrives — the same principle behind a well-designed trunk-and-branch layout, just easier to execute deliberately on a home-run system because every line is sized for exactly one fixture rather than shared traffic.
That third point isn't just plumber folklore.
