Uranium isn't a contaminant most well owners think to test for — it doesn't come from a leaking tank or a nearby industrial site, and it doesn't show up as a smell, a stain, or an off taste the way iron or sulfur do. It's naturally present in the rock and sediment under much of California, and in parts of the Central Valley it's leaching into the same aquifers that feed hundreds of thousands of private wells at levels the EPA considers a health risk. Here's what's actually going on, what a test costs, and what it takes to fix it.

How widespread this actually is

This isn't a rare, isolated finding. Research tracking the San Joaquin Valley specifically has found uranium above the federal safety limit in roughly a quarter of the domestic, irrigation, and public-supply wells sampled across the southeastern part of the valley, and reporting on state and federal groundwater data has put the number as high as one in four private wells across the broader San Joaquin Valley. Nationally, an estimated two million people in California's Central Valley and parts of the Midwest live within half a mile of groundwater that tests above the uranium limit — concentrated in Kern, Tulare, Kings, Fresno, and neighboring counties, with the eastern San Joaquin Valley among the highest-uranium groundwater anywhere in the country.

Why it's there, and why irrigation matters

Uranium occurs naturally in sediments that washed down from the Sierra Nevada into the Central Valley over millions of years, so the raw source has always been there. What's changed the picture is how that uranium gets mobilized into the water people actually pump and drink. A 2019 study by USGS researchers Michael Rosen, Karen Burow, and Miranda Fram, published in the Journal of Hydrology, sampled 257 wells across roughly 110,000 square kilometers of the southeastern San Joaquin Valley and found high uranium concentrations tied to bicarbonate-rich water — the kind produced when irrigation water seeps down through agricultural soil and picks up bicarbonate along the way, which then chemically leaches uranium out of the surrounding sediment and carries it into the aquifer (available via Google Scholar). In plain terms: decades of irrigating farmland on top of naturally uranium-bearing soil has quietly pushed more uranium into the groundwater below it than would occur from geology alone. The study notably found that nitrate — a separate, well-documented Central Valley groundwater problem — did not appear to drive uranium release the way bicarbonate did, so a well testing high for one doesn't automatically mean the other, and both are worth testing independently if you're in an agricultural area.

Why it matters for your health

Uranium's main health concern at drinking-water concentrations isn't primarily its radioactivity — it's chemical toxicity to the kidneys, which occurs at lower exposure levels than any meaningful radiation risk. Long-term exposure to elevated uranium has been linked to kidney damage, and as a radioactive heavy metal it's also treated as a long-term cancer risk factor by regulators. The EPA and California both set the enforceable Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for uranium at 30 micrograms per liter (µg/L), a limit that's been in place since 2003 and applies to public water systems. California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment has additionally set a non-enforceable public health goal far below that legal limit — a reminder that the MCL reflects a regulatory and treatment-cost balance, not the concentration regulators consider fully risk-free. Private wells aren't required to meet the MCL at all and aren't tested by anyone unless the owner arranges it, which is exactly how a well can test high for years without anyone knowing.

Testing: what it costs and how it fits with other well tests

Uranium testing runs roughly $20-$60 as a standalone lab test, or it's commonly bundled into a broader metals or radionuclide panel for $100-$250 that also screens for arsenic and other naturally occurring contaminants common in the same geology. Because uranium levels don't shift quickly the way bacteria or nitrate can, a one-time baseline test is usually enough — retested every few years, or sooner if you notice a change in well output, nearby land use, or irrigation patterns. A uranium result over 30 µg/L doesn't mean stop drinking the water in a panic — it means it's time to size and install the right treatment for your situation, the same way you'd respond to any well contaminant with an established, effective fix.
