Iron Bacteria in Well Water: Signs, Shock Chlorination & Treatment Cost in California
If a California well starts producing water with a reddish-brown, orange, or black slime rather than just discolored water, and it comes with a swampy or oily smell rather than the rotten-egg smell of sulfur, the cause is usually iron bacteria rather than dissolved iron or a coliform contamination event. It's a different problem from both of those, and it needs a different fix.
How it's different from staining and from coliform
Three separate well problems get confused with each other because they can all show up as discolored water: dissolved iron and manganese leave rust-colored staining on fixtures and laundry but no slime and usually no strong odor; total coliform or E. coli is a health-based fecal-contamination finding that a lab test flags with no visible sign at all; iron bacteria is neither of those — it's a naturally occurring microorganism that feeds on dissolved iron (and sometimes manganese) in groundwater and, in doing so, builds a slimy biofilm mat on well screens, pump parts, and pipe walls. It isn't generally considered a health hazard on its own, but it's a serious nuisance and equipment problem: the slime clogs well screens and pump intakes, reduces flow, and can shorten the life of a pump that has to work harder to push water through a coated system.
Signs to look for
- Slimy buildup in toilet tanks, faucet aerators, or the inside of a hose bib — reddish-brown, yellow-orange, or sometimes black and stringy rather than a hard mineral crust.
- A swampy, oily, or musty odor, distinct from the sulfur/rotten-egg smell of hydrogen sulfide, though the two can occur together in the same well.

Why a standard chlorine shock often isn't enough
A one-time shock chlorination — the standard fix for a coliform-positive well — knocks back iron bacteria temporarily but frequently doesn't clear it for good, and that's not a matter of doing it wrong. A 2010 study in Environmental Science & Technology testing treatments against Sphaerotilus natans, an iron-oxidizing bacterium isolated from a deep well, found that the bacterium's biofilm protects the organisms embedded in it from a plain chlorine solution — which is why the researchers tested a combined chemical-and-bacteriophage approach instead of chlorine alone (Gino, Starosvetsky, Kurzbaum & Armon, Environmental Science & Technology, 2010). In practical terms for a homeowner: the slime mat shields bacteria deep inside it, so a light or short chlorine dose clears the visible symptoms for a few months and then the slime comes back, sometimes worse, as the surviving colony regrows.
What treatment typically costs
