Coliform Bacteria in Well Water: Testing & Shock Chlorination Cost in California
A total coliform test is usually the first thing a California well owner runs — through a county environmental health lab, a private lab, or as part of a full private well water test panel — and for a lot of wells it comes back positive. That's more common than most homeowners expect: multiple state well surveys have found total coliform bacteria in roughly a quarter to nearly half of private wells tested. Here's what a positive result means, what it costs to fix, and when the fix doesn't hold.
What "coliform positive" actually means
Total coliform bacteria are a broad group found throughout the environment — soil, plant matter, surface water — and their presence in a well doesn't by itself mean the water will make anyone sick. What it means is that a pathway exists for something to get from the surface, or from a contaminated source, into your water supply. That pathway matters because it's also how disease-causing organisms would get in. E. coli, a subset of coliform bacteria that lives specifically in the intestines of humans and animals, is the more serious finding: a positive E. coli result points to fecal contamination and is treated as an immediate do-not-drink situation until the well is disinfected and retested clean.
A 2018 study of 118 private wells across four Maryland counties found total coliforms in about 25% of wells and E. coli in roughly 3–4%, with proximity to septic systems and agricultural land among the risk factors identified (Murray et al., International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2018). California's own well surveys, run through county environmental health departments rather than a single statewide database, show similar patterns in rural and semi-rural counties — older well casings, wells near septic leach fields, and wells with damaged or missing sanitary seals show up disproportionately in positive results.
What shock chlorination costs
For a straightforward positive coliform result with no structural well problem, the standard fix is shock chlorination — flooding the well and the household plumbing with a strong chlorine solution, letting it sit, then flushing it out.
- DIY shock chlorination: under $50 in materials. Unscented household bleach, a garden hose to recirculate the water through the casing, and 12–24 hours of contact time before flushing. It's a documented, publishable procedure — most state extension services (Penn State, UC ANR county offices) publish step-by-step guides — but it's easy to under-dose, miss part of the plumbing system, or introduce new contamination while doing it yourself.
