Why sun and heat are hard on PVC specifically

Two separate things happen to unprotected PVC pipe that sits outdoors: UV exposure and heat.

UV light breaks down the polymer chains in PVC's surface layer over time, a process that shows up as chalking, discoloration, and — most relevant for a pressurized line — brittleness. A 2013 materials-science study on chlorinated PVC weathering found that outdoor exposure measurably reduced the material's fracture strain (how much it can flex before cracking) well before its bulk strength or stiffness changed at all, meaning a pipe can look and test fine under a quick squeeze while already being far more prone to cracking under stress (Merah, Bazoune, Fazal & Khan, International Journal of Plastics Technology, 2013). That's a big part of why a sun-baked irrigation line or hose bib riser often fails suddenly, with no warning cracks, the first time it's jarred, over-tightened, or hit with a sprinkler head impact.

Heat does something different: it lowers how much pressure the pipe can safely handle. PVC's pressure rating is set at a baseline of about 73°F and has to be "derated" — reduced — as the pipe wall gets hotter, and pipe sitting in direct sun can run well above the surrounding air temperature. Manufacturer technical data consistently shows that once pipe-wall temperature climbs past roughly 100–110°F, a standard Schedule 40 PVC pipe's safe pressure capacity drops by roughly half or more compared to its rated value; it keeps derating further as temperatures climb toward its practical service ceiling around 140°F, above which it starts to soften. That's a real concern on a black asphalt-adjacent riser or a south-facing wall run during a Central Valley or desert summer, where the pipe surface itself can be running 40–50°F hotter than the air. CPVC, by comparison, tolerates roughly 200°F continuous service because the added chlorine raises its softening point — one reason CPVC (or copper) is generally preferred over PVC for any line that sees both heat and pressure, such as near a water heater, while PVC stays common and code-approved for cold-water irrigation and drain, waste and vent lines.

It's already a code requirement, not just good practice

This isn't only a maintenance tip: the plumbing code that California cities enforce, based on the Uniform Plumbing Code, already requires that PVC pipe exposed to direct sunlight be protected from UV degradation — typically satisfied with a water-based UV-resistant latex paint or an approved wrap, rather than being left bare.
