How to Test Your Home’s Water Pressure (and What the PSI Reading Means) in California
Water pressure is one of the few plumbing numbers you can actually measure yourself in about five minutes, with a $10-$15 gauge and no tools beyond your own hands. It's worth doing even if nothing seems wrong: pressure that's quietly running too high wears out fixtures, water heaters and supply lines for years before anything visibly fails, while pressure that's a little low can make a shower feel weak long before you'd think to call it a "problem." What you need
A simple threaded water pressure gauge, sold at any hardware store, is all it takes. It screws directly onto an outdoor hose bib the same way a garden hose would. Skip the smart plug-in sensors and app-connected gauges for this — they're useful for ongoing monitoring, but a basic mechanical gauge gives you the same reading for a fraction of the price and nothing to pair or charge.
How to test it, step by step
- Pick a hose bib close to your main water line — usually the one nearest where the line enters the house, before it branches off to fixtures. Any exterior spigot works, but one closest to the main line gives the most accurate whole-house reading.
- Turn off everything else that uses water — no dishwasher, washing machine, sprinklers or someone showering upstairs. Running fixtures elsewhere in the house will drag the reading down and make it look lower than your real static pressure.
- Screw the gauge onto the hose bib by hand, snug but not wrench-tight — these fittings are designed for hand tightening, and forcing them with a wrench can strip the threads.
- Open the hose bib all the way and let the needle settle for a few seconds before reading it. Note the number.

What counts as a normal reading
Plumbing-industry guidance generally treats 40-80 psi as the acceptable range for a home, with 50-70 psi — often centered around 60 psi — described as the comfortable middle where fixtures get strong flow without extra wear. There's no single official "ideal" number published by a state agency; it's a practical range drawn from how supply lines, valves and appliances are engineered to perform. Two figures on either edge of that range matter more than the rest:
- Below 40 psi is generally considered low — showers, tubs filling and multi-fixture use (like a dishwasher running while someone showers) are where it becomes noticeable first.
- Above 80 psi is where California's own plumbing code steps in, not just a comfort guideline.
If your reading is above 80 psi
This isn't a judgment call — it's code. Under California Plumbing Code Section 608.2, when static water pressure exceeds 80 psi, an approved pressure regulator (meeting ASSE 1003) preceded by a strainer is required to bring it back down to 80 psi or less, and an expansion tank is required on the cold-water line downstream of that regulator to absorb the pressure spikes caused by water heating.
