It usually happens at the worst moment — a washing machine finishes filling, a dishwasher solenoid snaps shut, an ice maker tops off — and somewhere inside the wall a pipe slams hard enough to make the whole house jump. Homeowners often assume it is the water heater or a loose pipe, but the real culprit is almost always a fast-closing valve stopping a fast-moving column of water dead. The fix is a small, sealed device called a water hammer arrestor, and unlike a lot of plumbing repairs, it is genuinely inexpensive to get right. What water hammer actually is
Water moving through a supply line has real momentum — a half-inch line at normal household flow can be moving several feet per second. When a valve slams shut in a fraction of a second (an electric solenoid valve on a washing machine or dishwasher, not a hand-turned faucet), that moving column of water has nowhere to go. The kinetic energy converts instantly into a pressure spike that can momentarily exceed 500 psi in an ordinary residential line rated nowhere near that — and the shockwave travels back through the pipe, banging it against framing, joist straps, and fittings until the energy dissipates. Do it a few times a day for years and it is not just noise: repeated pressure spikes work-harden solder joints, loosen strapped pipe, and stress the weakest fitting in the run until something eventually weeps or fails outright.
Where it comes from — and why old fixes stop working
- Washing machine and dishwasher solenoid valves are the single most common source — they are built to close in a fraction of a second by design, which is exactly the condition that causes hammer.

How to tell if you need one
- Run the washing machine or dishwasher through a normal cycle and listen for a bang or shudder right when it stops filling — that timing (not while running, but at the moment the valve shuts) is the signature of hammer rather than some other pipe noise.
- Check whether a laundry box or dishwasher line already has an arrestor — it looks like a small metal cylinder, a couple inches long, capping off a tee near the valve. If the connection is a bare tee with no cylinder, there is nothing absorbing the shock.
- Note which fixture triggers it. Hammer localized to one line (just the icemaker, just the laundry) usually means a fixture-specific arrestor is missing there; hammer everywhere in the house points more toward high system pressure, which is worth checking alongside any arrestor work.
- Have a plumber install or replace the arrestor at the valve itself — arrestors are not serviceable and, like old air chambers, mini-arrestors can eventually water-log too; a unit that used to work and has gone quiet again usually just needs swapping, not full diagnosis.
It is a small fix for a problem that sounds a lot more alarming than it usually is — but "usually" is doing some work in that sentence, since years of un-cushioned pressure spikes are a real, if slow, way to shorten the life of solder joints and fittings elsewhere in the house.
