It usually happens at the worst moment — a washing machine finishes filling, a dishwasher solenoid snaps shut, an ice maker tops off — and somewhere inside the wall a pipe slams hard enough to make the whole house jump. What water hammer actually is

Water moving through a supply line has real momentum — a half-inch line at normal household flow can be moving several feet per second. When a valve slams shut in a fraction of a second (an electric solenoid valve on a washing machine or dishwasher, not a hand-turned faucet), that moving column of water has nowhere to go. The kinetic energy converts instantly into a pressure spike that can momentarily exceed 500 psi in an ordinary residential line rated nowhere near that — and the shockwave travels back through the pipe, banging it against framing, joist straps, and fittings until the energy dissipates. Do it a few times a day for years and it is not just noise: repeated pressure spikes work-harden solder joints, loosen strapped pipe, and stress the weakest fitting in the run until something eventually weeps or fails outright.

What California code says

The Uniform Plumbing Code — the base of the California Plumbing Code — addresses this directly in UPC Section 609.10: building water supply systems using quick-closing valves must be fitted with an approved mechanical device to absorb the resulting pressure shock, installed as close to the valve as the manufacturer's instructions allow, and the device must meet ASSE 1010 or PDI-WH 201 listing standards. In plain terms, a washing machine outlet box, a dishwasher connection, and an ice maker line are exactly the fixtures this section is written for. California's state-level code leaves some of the finer points (which specific fixtures, air chamber acceptability) to local amendments, so requirements can vary slightly by city — but the baseline expectation, that quick-closing valves get an arrestor rather than an open, unprotected line, is consistent statewide. Most inspectors will flag its absence at rough-in on new construction and remodels; on an existing home nobody is going to red-tag you retroactively, but it is the same code-recognized fix either way.

Why pipe material changes the picture

Not every pipe absorbs a pressure spike the same way. A 2024 experimental and numerical study by Kandil, El-Sayed and Kamal, published in Scientific Reports, measured water hammer pressure and pipe wall strain across different materials on a purpose-built test rig and found that pipes with a lower elastic modulus — like PP-R and uPVC — absorbed a meaningfully larger share of the shock than rigid steel pipe, which transmitted more of the spike straight through the wall (study on Google Scholar). Rigid copper sits closer to steel on that spectrum than flexible PEX does, which is one reason houses that have gone through a copper-to-PEX repipe sometimes notice hammer easing off even without adding a single arrestor — PEX's flexibility absorbs some of the shock the old rigid lines used to transmit straight into the framing. It is not a substitute for an arrestor at the valve itself, but it explains why the same washing machine can bang loudly in one house and barely tick in another.

How to tell if you need one

  1. Run the washing machine or dishwasher through a normal cycle and listen for a bang or shudder right when it stops filling — that timing (not while running, but at the moment the valve shuts) is the signature of hammer rather than some other pipe noise.
  2. Check whether a laundry box or dishwasher line already has an arrestor — it looks like a small metal cylinder, a couple inches long, capping off a tee near the valve. If the connection is a bare tee with no cylinder, there is nothing absorbing the shock.
  3. Note which fixture triggers it. Hammer localized to one line (just the icemaker, just the laundry) usually means a fixture-specific arrestor is missing there; hammer everywhere in the house points more toward high system pressure, which is worth checking alongside any arrestor work.
  4. Have a plumber install or replace the arrestor at the valve itself — arrestors are not serviceable and, like old air chambers, mini-arrestors can eventually water-log too; a unit that used to work and has gone quiet again usually just needs swapping, not full diagnosis.

It is a small fix for a problem that sounds a lot more alarming than it usually is — but "usually" is doing some work in that sentence, since years of un-cushioned pressure spikes are a real, if slow, way to shorten the life of solder joints and fittings elsewhere in the house.
