Replacing a kitchen sink looks like a simple swap — disconnect, lift out, drop in, reconnect. Sometimes it is. But the kitchen sink is the busiest plumbing fixture in the house, and it sits at the junction of the faucet, the garbage disposal, the dishwasher drain, and the trap, so the price of the job depends less on the sink itself than on how many of those connections come apart cleanly and how the new sink mounts to the counter. Here is what California homeowners typically pay and what moves the number.

Typical cost ranges

• Like-for-like drop-in (top-mount) swap: roughly $300–$800 all-in, including a mid-range stainless sink and 2–3 hours of labor. This is the cheapest scenario because the counter opening does not change.
• Undermount replacement: roughly $500–$1,200. The sink is glued and clipped to the underside of the counter, so removal is slower and the new sink must match the existing cutout closely.
• Farmhouse / apron-front conversion: often $1,000–$2,500+, because the cabinet usually needs modification to carry the weight and the counter opening must be recut.
• Sink only (you supply it): plumber labor alone typically runs $200–$500 for a straightforward swap in California, more if the drain assembly, disposal, or shutoff valves need work.
