When Californians hear "slab leak," they usually picture a pressurized water line spraying under the foundation. But there's a second, quieter version: a drain or sewer line leaking under the slab. Because drain pipes only carry water when something is running, these leaks can go unnoticed for years — no spinning water meter, no hot spot on the floor — while wastewater slowly saturates the soil under your foundation. Here's how they're found, fixed, and priced.

How it differs from a pressurized slab leak

A classic slab leak is on the supply side: pressurized 24/7, so it announces itself through a high water bill, a running-water sound, or a warm floor spot. A sewer-side leak under the slab only leaks when fixtures drain, and the water disappears into soil. Typical tells:

• Persistent sewage or musty odor with no visible source — often with drain flies appearing from cracks and floor drains.
• A dome or heave in the slab, or cracks in floors and walls — leaking wastewater can swell expansive clay soils under the foundation.
• Unexplained lush spots, soggy soil at the foundation edge, or foundation movement.

Leaking sewers aren't just a private-property nuisance. A review by Mandy Rutsch, Jörg Rieckermann and colleagues published in Water Research (2008) synthesized what's known about sewer exfiltration — wastewater escaping defective sewer pipes into surrounding soil — and documented both how commonly it occurs in aging pipes and how difficult it is to quantify, precisely because the leakage is hidden underground (see the study). How pros confirm it

• Camera inspection of the under-slab lines ($250–$500 — see camera inspection costs) to spot cracks, offsets, and channeling.
• Hydrostatic test — plugging the line at the cleanout and filling the system to slab level; if the water level drops, the under-slab drains leak. Typically $250–$500, often bundled with the camera.
• Smoke testing or dye testing to trace odors to a specific breach.

Repair options and California costs

• Spot repair through the slab: jackhammer the floor above the break, replace the section, repour. Typically $2,000–$6,000 per location, plus interior flooring repair.

• Sectional lining or epoxy coating of under-slab drains where the pipe is intact enough to host it — a real option for pinholed cast iron, less so for collapsed or badly channeled pipe.

Will insurance pay?

Same battlefield as pressurized slab leaks: policies commonly cover the access and tear-out (breaking and repairing the slab) but exclude the failed pipe itself, and long-term seepage is a common denial ground.
