Cost to Relocate a Kitchen Sink to a New Wall or Island
"Can we just move the sink over there?" is one of the most common questions in a kitchen layout meeting, and one of the hardest to answer with one number. On the drawing it is one fixture sliding across a floor plan. Underneath it is three separate jobs — supply, drain and vent — that scale very differently with distance.
The three jobs hiding inside one request
Every relocation quote is a bundle. Ask a plumber to price the parts separately:
- Supply lines (hot and cold). The cheapest part, almost always. Water is under pressure, so the pipe can run uphill, around a corner or through a joist bay — it only has to get there.
- The drain. Gravity only, so the new run has to fall continuously toward the existing waste line. This is where geometry starts to say no.
- The vent. The part homeowners never budget for, and the part that most often decides whether a layout is buildable.
A move that reuses the drain and vent and only extends supply is cheap. A move that rebuilds all three is a different project, even if the sink travels eight feet.
Why sliding along the same wall is cheap
Shifting a sink two or three feet along the same run of cabinets usually keeps it within reach of the existing drain and vent. The trap arm — the pipe between the P-trap and the vent connection — just gets longer, and as long as it stays inside code limits, nothing structural changes. Those limits are specific. Under the Uniform Plumbing Code behind California's code, the maximum developed length from trap to vent is roughly 30 inches for 1-1/4 inch pipe, 42 inches for 1-1/2 inch, and 5 feet for 2 inch. The run must fall at the standard quarter inch per foot, and total drop across the trap arm cannot exceed one pipe diameter — which is why those caps exist. Too much fall and the pipe siphons the trap dry; too little and it will not drain. A kitchen sink drain is typically 1-1/2 or 2 inch pipe, so a short shift usually fits. Cross the room and it does not, and a new vent connection becomes mandatory.
Slab-on-grade versus crawl space
Foundation type is the largest multiplier on any relocation quote, decided before anyone picks up a tool.
- Raised foundation or crawl space: the plumber works from underneath. New drain pipe is hung at the correct slope and tied into the waste line, and the vent routes up inside a wall. Messy, but straightforward.
- Slab-on-grade: the drain is buried in the concrete. Moving it means saw-cutting the slab, hand-digging around whatever else is down there, laying and inspecting new pipe, backfilling, re-pouring, then repairing the finished floor. Trenching alone commonly runs $15 to $30 per linear foot; with cutting, spoil removal and re-pouring, budget more like $40 to $120 per linear foot.
- Post-tension slab: common in newer tract housing. The slab holds tensioned steel cables that must be located by scanning before any cutting. Expect a scanning fee and some contractors declining outright.

The vent is the part that surprises people
Without a vent, water leaving the sink pulls a vacuum that siphons the trap seal out, and the trap stops blocking sewer gas. Not theoretical: a 2012 paper by Gormley, Swaffield, Sleigh and Noakes in Building Services Engineering Research and Technology assessed cross-contamination routes created by defective appliance water trap seals in building drainage systems (study on Google Scholar), and a 2017 full-scale pilot-rig study by Gormley and colleagues in PLoS ONE showed ordinary drainage airflows were enough to carry aerosolized organisms between floors where trap seals were lost (study on Google Scholar). Venting rules are what prevent that, which is why inspectors are inflexible.
Three practical consequences:
- Re-venting costs real money. If the new location is out of trap-arm range of the existing vent, a new vent has to be run up inside a wall and through the roof, or tied into an existing stack at an approved point. Opening finished walls plus a roof penetration is a real line item.
- Wet venting rarely rescues a kitchen. The code does let a drain double as a vent in narrow cases, but the provisions are tightly bounded: vertical wet vents are capped at a short developed length and a few low-fixture-unit fixtures, and the horizontal wet venting section is written around bathroom groups. A kitchen sink on the far wall rarely fits.
- An air admittance valve is not a guaranteed answer. Unlike International Plumbing Code jurisdictions, California treats AAVs as an alternate method needing the building department's sign-off, and plenty of jurisdictions restrict or refuse them. What moves with the sink
The sink does not travel alone, and each attached item adds cost:
- Garbage disposal: needs a switched outlet at the new spot as well as the drain connection — budget for an electrician if no circuit is there.
- Dishwasher: its drain hose has to reach the new sink, which sometimes means the dishwasher moves too. California requires a high loop or air gap — see our dishwasher air gap guide. An air gap needs a hole in the countertop, so decide before fabrication.
Permits and inspection
Relocating a fixture alters the drain, waste and vent system, which means a permit in essentially every California jurisdiction — commonly $75 to $300, though scope and city vary. What matters for scheduling is the rough-in inspection: the inspector needs to see drain slope, trap arm length and the vent connection before drywall, flooring or cabinets close them up. Honest total ranges by scenario
Plumbing-only figures, excluding cabinetry, countertop, flooring repair and the fixture itself:
- Small shift along the same wall, existing drain and vent reused: roughly $500 to $1,500.
- Different wall, crawl space or raised foundation, new vent tie-in: roughly $1,500 to $4,000.
- Different wall over a slab, with saw-cutting and re-pouring: roughly $2,500 to $6,000, driven by trench length.
- Into a kitchen island: roughly $2,500 to $6,000 and up, with a loop vent typically adding $600 to $2,000 or more on top.
Add 10 to 20 percent contingency; under-slab work has a habit of finding cast iron or a drain shallower than assumed.
