Push-to-Connect (SharkBite-Style) Fittings: Code, Cost & Reliability in California
A push-to-connect fitting — SharkBite is the best-known brand, but Apollo, Cash Acme and others make the same style — lets you join copper, PEX or CPVC by pushing the pipe in, no torch, no crimper, no glue. That is exactly why it shows up in almost every home's "emergency fix" story, and exactly why it generates so much anxious searching afterward: is this actually allowed, or did I just create a problem for the next owner?
Are push-fit fittings code-compliant in California?
Yes, when the fitting is tested and listed to ASSE 1061, the governing US performance standard for push-fit fittings, and installed per the manufacturer's instructions. The 2019 California Plumbing Code recognizes push-fit joints built to that standard, and IAPMO's own supplementary testing (IGC 188) covers the same category. A properly listed fitting used within its approved pipe types and sizes is not a code violation by itself.
The detail most DIY guides skip is that ASSE 1061 covers two distinct categories, and they are not interchangeable:
- Non-removable fittings — no lever, no collar release; once pushed on, they are meant to stay. These are the type tested and listed for permanent, concealed use: inside a wall, under a slab, or anywhere else with no future access.
- Removable fittings — the ones with a colored collar or release tool that lets you pull the pipe back out. These are built for serviceability, not concealment, and the expectation baked into their listing is that they stay reachable — behind an access panel, under a sink, in a crawlspace — not buried behind drywall.
Confuse the two and you get the actual problem homeowners run into at resale or during a remodel: a removable fitting sealed inside a finished wall, which an inspector or a buyer's plumber will flag even though "push-fit fittings are legal in California" is technically true. What they cost versus the alternatives
Push-to-connect fittings are priced for convenience, not for being the cheapest option:
- Push-fit fitting (DIY part cost): roughly $5-$25 per fitting, no tools required beyond a pipe cutter and a deburring tool.
- Soldered copper joint (professional labor): the fitting itself is often under $5, but a plumber's time, torch setup and flux typically put an installed joint in the $15-$40 range per connection — more if the area has to be protected from a wet copper repair or open flame.

Where push-to-connect actually saves money is emergency labor: a plumber who can make a permanent, code-listed repair in two minutes instead of shutting off water, draining a line and soldering bills less time on an after-hours emergency call. That is a legitimate, common professional use — not just a DIY shortcut.
The real weak point isn't the code — it's the O-ring
Every push-to-connect fitting seals with a rubber O-ring, almost always EPDM. That is the same category of rubber used throughout the water industry for gaskets and seals, and it has a documented vulnerability: chloramine, the disinfectant most California water utilities now use instead of plain chlorine, degrades some elastomer compounds faster than free chlorine does. A 2014 study by Nagisetty, Rockaway and Willing published in the Journal AWWA found that chloramine exposure can cause measurable swelling, hardness change and surface degradation in common water-system elastomers, with the severity depending heavily on the specific rubber formulation and cure method. That is not a finding about any one brand of fitting — it is a finding about the material class every push-fit O-ring belongs to, which is exactly why manufacturers specify particular EPDM compounds and why buying a listed, name-brand fitting (rather than an off-brand import of unknown rubber) is not just marketing.
Practically, that means a push-fit connection is not "install and forget forever" in the way most homeowners treat a soldered joint. It is a mechanical seal with a rubber component operating in treated water for decades — the same category of long-term maintenance item as the rubber-lined supply lines or sacrificial parts already on most fixture lists. - Is it ASSE 1061-listed? Check the fitting body or packaging; unlisted imported fittings are the ones actually associated with code pushback.
- Removable or non-removable? If it's the removable type, it needs to stay reachable — not closed up behind a wall.
- Is it rated for the pipe material and pressure in this line? Manufacturer instructions specify approved pipe types (copper, PEX, CPVC, PE-RT) and won't cover, say, galvanized steel without a separate compatible fitting.
