Microplastics in California Tap Water: What Actually Filters Them Out?
Microplastics have joined PFAS and chromium-6 on the list of things homeowners ask their plumber about after seeing a headline. Unlike those two, microplastics aren't a regulated contaminant with a state action level — there's no California mandate to test for them or report results on your water utility's annual quality report. That makes them harder to research, and easier to either dismiss or overreact to. Here's what the actual evidence says, and what — if anything — is worth installing.
What the research actually shows
Microplastics are plastic fragments and fibers generally under 5mm, with the ones found in drinking water typically far smaller — many under 10 microns, roughly a tenth the width of a human hair. A widely cited systematic review by Danopoulos, Twiddy and Rotchell, published in PLOS ONE in 2020, pooled the strongest available studies on tap and bottled water and found that every study meeting rigorous quality standards confirmed some level of microplastic contamination, most commonly polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene fragments (study on Google Scholar). Where the science gets less alarming: the World Health Organization's own 2019 review of the topic concluded there is currently no evidence of a human health risk from the microplastic levels typically found in drinking water, while also flagging that measurement methods are still inconsistent and more research is needed. In short — they're there, in essentially all tested water supplies including California's, and the health significance is still an open question rather than a settled danger.
Where they come from
Unlike lead, which leaches from aging plumbing, microplastics mostly enter water before it ever reaches your service line: breakdown of plastic waste in source water, treatment and distribution infrastructure, and — for bottled water specifically — the bottle and cap themselves, which several studies found contribute more microplastic than tap water does. Inside a home, worn PEX or plastic supply fittings and plastic fixtures can theoretically shed a small additional amount, though this hasn't been shown to be a major contributor compared to the water supply itself.
The certification that actually matters: NSF/ANSI 401
Because there's no state or federal microplastics standard, the practical benchmark for consumers is NSF/ANSI 401, the certification covering "emerging contaminants." A filter certified to this standard has been independently tested to reduce at least 85% of the target particles in controlled lab conditions, at the specific micron size the certification covers. What actually removes them
Filtration technology, not filter brand, is what determines whether microplastics get caught. In descending order of how fine a particle they physically exclude:
- Reverse osmosis (RO) — the membrane pore size (roughly 0.0001 micron) is far below even the smallest microplastic fragments, making RO the most thorough option. It also handles PFAS, TDS and most dissolved contaminants in the same pass.
- Ultrafiltration / nanofiltration — a step down from RO but still fine enough to catch the large majority of microplastic particles, with less wastewater and lower pressure requirements.
- Sub-micron carbon block or ceramic filters — the filtration standard behind most quality under-sink and whole-house systems; effective on particles down to their rated micron size, and usually the most practical whole-house option since RO isn't typically installed at the point of entry.
- Standard sediment or carbon filters (the kind built into a basic fridge dispenser or a cheap pitcher) — these remove taste, chlorine and larger sediment, but most are not rated fine enough to reliably catch sub-micron microplastic fragments.
What it costs, installed

- Under-sink RO system, installed: typically $300–$1,500 depending on stage count and whether a dedicated faucet and remineralization stage are included.
- Whole-house sub-micron carbon or multi-stage filtration: typically $1,000–$3,000+ installed, similar territory to a whole-house softener and often bundled with one since hard water and filtration upgrades are frequently done in the same visit.
- Whole-house RO: the most expensive route, generally $2,000–$5,000+ installed, and overkill for most households unless there's a specific documented contaminant concern beyond microplastics.
For most homeowners whose actual concern is drinking and cooking water rather than every tap in the house, an under-sink RO system is the proportionate answer — full-home coverage costs meaningfully more for a benefit (shower and laundry water) that the current evidence doesn't clearly justify.
Is this worth doing now?
Given the WHO's own conclusion that no health risk has been demonstrated at typical exposure levels, microplastic filtration falls into the "reasonable precaution" category rather than an urgent fix — closer in spirit to installing a water softener for scale than to addressing a documented contaminant like lead or arsenic. If you're already planning a filtration upgrade for other reasons — hard water, chlorine taste, or a documented issue on your utility's water quality report — choosing NSF/ANSI 401-certified equipment costs little or nothing extra and covers microplastics as a side benefit. Installing a system for microplastics alone, ahead of everything else on a tight renovation budget, isn't where most licensed plumbers in California would tell you to spend first.
