Tankless water heaters earn their reputation for longevity — 15 to 20 years against 8 to 12 for a tank — but they are not maintenance-free, and when they act up they do it in a distinctly modern way: a blinking error code and no hot water. The good news is that a tankless unit is a computer-controlled appliance that usually tells you what's wrong. This guide translates the common failures into realistic California repair costs, so the error code on the display doesn't automatically become the price of a new unit.

Common failures and repair costs

• Ignition or flame failure: $150–$500. The most frequent service call. Causes range from a failing igniter or flame rod to gas supply problems — an undersized gas line is a classic issue on units that were retrofitted without upsizing the supply, something our gas line guide covers.
• Scale buildup: $150–$350 for a descaling service. In California's largely hard-water regions, mineral scale on the heat exchanger is the number one slow killer of tankless units — symptoms include temperature swings and reduced flow. Why hard water matters so much

Scale is not a cosmetic issue in a tankless unit — the entire appliance is a narrow-passage heat exchanger doing intense, on-demand heat transfer. Decoding the error code

Codes vary by brand, but the families are consistent: ignition failures (often 11 on Rinnai, 111 on Navien), flame loss during operation (12), overheat or exchanger issues (14, E003-style codes), venting and air supply faults (10, E110), and flow/scale warnings (LC or 088 on some brands — literally a "lime/scale" maintenance code). Two useful rules: a code that clears after a descale was probably scale, and a code that returns immediately after a reset is a component, not a glitch. Write the code down before power-cycling — it's the single most useful thing you can give a plumber on the phone.

Repair or replace?

• Under 10 years old: repair almost always wins, especially since many heat exchangers carry 12–15 year manufacturer warranties (parts, not labor).
