The diverter is the little mechanism that sends water up to the showerhead instead of out the tub spout. When it fails, you get the tell-tale symptom: the shower runs weak while water keeps pouring from the tub spout below, wasting pressure and water. It's a small part with an outsized nuisance factor, and because showers are one of the largest indoor water uses in a home — the WRF Residential End Uses of Water study by DeOreo, Mayer and colleagues found showering among the top categories of household indoor consumption — a diverter that dumps half the flow out the spout quietly wastes a meaningful amount of water. Here's what's happening and what it costs.
The two kinds of diverter
Which one you have determines the fix:
- Tub-spout diverter (pull-up type). The little knob you lift on the tub spout itself. When it wears out, water won't fully divert upward. The fix is usually just replacing the whole tub spout — an inexpensive part and often a DIY job.
- In-wall / three-valve or single-handle diverter. A separate diverter valve behind the wall (common on older three-handle setups, or built into a single-handle valve). Replacing this means accessing the valve body, closer to the shower valve replacement family of jobs.
Why diverters fail
Two main reasons: mechanical wear of the internal seal or gate, and — very common in California — mineral scale from hard water gumming up the mechanism so it can't seat fully. A diverter that's getting stiff or only partly diverting is often on its way out. What replacement costs
- Tub-spout diverter (spout replacement): the part is cheap; installed by a plumber it's a quick job, often bundled into a service-call minimum. Many homeowners do this one themselves.
- In-wall diverter valve: commonly $200-$450+ installed, more if the valve is old, seized, or behind tile that complicates access.
- Full valve body replacement: if the diverter is integral to a failed valve, expect it to track with the fixture repair cost range and the anti-scald valve job.
DIY or call a pro?
A screw-on or slip-fit tub spout is a reasonable DIY swap — hand-tight or a set screw, no wall to open. An in-wall diverter valve is a plumber job for most people: it's behind tile, and getting it wrong means water in the wall cavity. If lifting the tub-spout knob no longer sends water up and a new spout didn't fix it, the diverter is in the wall.
