Radiant Floor Heating Installation Cost in California: Hydronic vs. Electric, New Build vs. Retrofit
Radiant floor heating shows up in two very different California conversations: a warm-tile upgrade during a bathroom remodel, and a whole-house heating decision during a major renovation or new build. The two projects share a name and almost nothing else — including price. Here is what each actually costs, and the retrofit realities that quotes often gloss over.
Electric radiant: the bathroom-scale project
Electric systems — heating cable or mats under tile — are the accessible version:
- Materials: roughly $8–$15 per square foot including mat, thermostat and sensor.
- Installed in a typical 50–100 sq ft bathroom: $800–$2,500 when done during a planned floor replacement — the tile work is happening anyway, so the mat is incremental cost.
- A dedicated circuit from the panel, if needed, adds $200–$600.

Hydronic radiant: the whole-house system
Hydronic radiant circulates warm water through PEX loops in or under the floor, fed by a boiler or high-output water heater:
- New construction or full gut renovation: typically $8–$20 per square foot for the radiant system itself, plus the heat source.
- Retrofit over an existing slab or subfloor (overpour, panels, or joist-bay installation from below): $12–$30+ per square foot, driven by access and floor height issues.

Why people pay for it anyway
Radiant's case is comfort and efficiency at low water temperatures. The physics is well documented: work by Bjarne Olesen — one of the field's leading researchers, published among other places in the ASHRAE Journal (2002) under the title "Radiant floor heating in theory and practice" — shows that because a radiant floor warms occupants directly and keeps the warmth in the occupied zone, people report equal comfort at lower air temperatures than with forced air, and the system runs on water often below 100–110°F (study on Google Scholar). Those low temperatures are exactly where condensing boilers and heat pumps reach their best efficiency — one reason radiant pairs well with electrification plans.
Retrofit realities to price before you commit
- Floor height: overpour and panel systems raise the floor 3/4"–1.5" — doors, transitions and appliances all care.
- Floor coverings: tile and engineered wood work well; thick carpet blunts the system.
- Zoning and controls: manifolds and thermostats per zone are where mid-project change orders breed — get them itemized.
