Point-of-Use Tankless Water Heater Cost in California: When a Small Unit Beats a Bigger Fix
Most California homeowners who look up "point-of-use tankless water heater" have one specific complaint: a single distant bathroom, a laundry sink, or a detached office or ADU that takes forever to get hot water, or never gets it hot enough. What a point-of-use unit actually is
A point-of-use (POU) electric tankless heater is a compact unit, often not much bigger than a shoebox, mounted under a sink or in a nearby closet or crawlspace, that heats water on demand for one fixture or one small cluster of fixtures (a single bathroom's sink, shower and toilet, for example). It draws standard cold supply and heats it electrically as it flows, with no storage tank and no standby loss. That makes it fundamentally different from the instant hot water dispenser under a kitchen sink, which keeps a small tank of near-boiling water on standby for tea and cooking rather than heating flowing water for a shower or full sink use.
What it costs
Pricing splits sharply by capacity:
- Single-tap, low-flow mini units (a bathroom sink, a wet bar, an RV-style connection) — unit cost typically $150–$300, installed total often $400–$700 when the location already has adequate electrical capacity nearby.

- Electrical work is usually the swing cost, not the heater. Most units in the useful capacity range need a dedicated 30–60 amp, 240V circuit. The tradeoffs worth knowing before you buy
- Flow rate limits. Electric point-of-use units are capacity-limited by the size of electrical circuit a homeowner is willing to install. A unit sized generously for one shower may bog down (deliver lukewarm water) if someone runs the sink at the same time — size for the actual simultaneous demand at that location, not just the fixture count.
- California's climate helps.
