Faucet swap vs. sink swap vs. full vanity
These are three different jobs, and the price reflects it:
- Faucet replacement (same holes, same sink) is the simplest — disconnect the supply lines and drain, lift out the old faucet, seat the new one. Often a DIY-friendly afternoon; as a paid call, the minimum service fee usually dominates.
- Sink or basin replacement adds sealing the new basin, reconnecting the drain and trap, and sometimes adapting the faucet holes — more labor and more that can go wrong.
- New vanity with sink and faucet is a small remodel: removing the old cabinet, setting and leveling the new one, connecting supply and drain, and often adjusting the shutoff valves. This is where cost climbs, especially if the plumbing rough-in has to move.
What drives the price
Beyond the scope above, the main cost factors are:
- The fixtures you choose. Faucet and sink prices range enormously; the labor to install a $60 faucet and a $600 one is similar, so your selection often moves the total more than the labor does.
- Condition of the existing shutoffs and supply lines. Old, corroded angle stops that won't seal are a common surprise — replacing them is cheap but adds time, and it's better done now than after a leak.
- Whether the drain and trap need work. A mismatched or corroded P-trap, or a drain that has to move for a new basin, adds labor.
- Access and surprises behind an old vanity — water damage, mould, or non-standard rough-in plumbing.
