Tank water heaters: start with First Hour Rating, not gallons

The one hour that matters is your household's actual peak — for most families that's the weekday morning stretch when two showers, a load of laundry and a dishwasher cycle can overlap. Tankless: sized by flow rate and temperature rise, not household size
