A single radiator that won't warm up rarely means the whole heating system is broken — it usually means air, sludge, or a stuck valve is stopping hot water from moving through that one unit. Cold at the top, warm at the bottom: trapped air

This is the classic and most fixable case. Air rises to the top of the radiator and blocks hot water from filling it, so the top stays cold while the bottom is warm. The fix is bleeding the radiator: with the heating off, open the bleed valve with a radiator key until water (not air) escapes, then close it. It's a genuine DIY job. If radiators need bleeding often, though, air is getting in somewhere — usually a sign of a leak or a failing part worth a look, and possibly the same issue behind a system that struggles to heat.

Cold at the bottom, warm at the top: sludge

The opposite pattern points to sludge — corrosion debris (iron oxide) settling in the bottom of the radiator and blocking flow. Bleeding won't fix this. It's cleared by flushing the radiator or, if the whole system is affected, a professional power flush that circulates cleaner through every radiator and loop. Cold all over: valve or flow problem

If a radiator is stone cold top to bottom while others heat, suspect a closed or stuck valve — either the manual valve, the thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) with a seized pin, or the lockshield valve on the return. A stuck TRV pin can sometimes be freed by hand; a failed valve is a plumber replacement, typically a couple hundred dollars per valve installed. Unbalanced system: some rooms never keep up

If the radiators nearest the boiler run hot while the far ones stay lukewarm, the system likely needs balancing — adjusting the lockshield valves so flow is shared evenly instead of short-circuiting through the closest units. What to try yourself, and when to call

Bleeding a radiator and freeing an obviously stuck TRV pin are reasonable DIY.
